Simple Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) Remedies For Your Child

Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye occurs very commonly in adults, small children, and infants. Especially if this is your baby’s first Spring or Winter. There can be several causes of the condition and most cases are highly contagious. Though conjunctivitis may be extremely irritating and maybe even painful, it is a very simple condition to clear up right at home.

What Is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) happens when the lining of the eye becomes inflamed. This thin lining, called the conjunctiva, covers the outer layer of the eye, (sclera)and the inside of the eyelids. Due to swollen blood vessels in the eye, it becomes pink or red, watery or dry, or itchy, with a burning sensation. The eye will probably discharge, leaving a crust over the eye when waking up from sleep.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis: This type of Pink Eye is very contagious, and is caused by different types of bacteria, and usually produces a yellow discharge in the eye. More serious cases of this type of Pink Eye can produce a greenish color discharge. This type may also be accompanied by an ear or sinus infection.

Viral Conjunctivitis: This type of Pink Eye is also highly contagious, and can be spread through the air. This is generally caused by upper respiratory infections, such as a common cold or the flu. It generally produces a clear, watery discharge. The good thing about viral conjunctivitis is that it usually clears up on its own in about a week’s time.

Allergic Conjunctivitis: This type of Pink Eye is not at all contagious, and can be caused by typical allergens like pollen, dust, pet hair or dander, smoke, etc. This type can cause white, yellow, or gray stings of mucus to build under the lower and upper eyelids and can leave eyes feeling extremely dry.

A Few Simple Remedies

When my 18 year old was just a toddler, he would always contract Pink Eye from either camp, school, or just playing outside with friends. After about the third episode, I did my own research and put a few natural remedies to the test. We haven’t been to the doctor for this issue since. My four year old contracted it when she experienced her first spring. By then, I was a pro at getting rid of conjunctivitis at home, so she was all cleared up in just a few days.

Green and Black tea: These teas are very high in antioxidants, which helps to fight off bacterial and viral infections. It also relieves the blood vessels in the eyes of inflammation and irritation. The black tea is higher in the antioxidants than the green, but they both work just as great. You could either steep the tea bag and place the warm bag over the eyes for 10 to 15 minutes, or take the warm tea (just about room temperature) that’s been steeped from the bag and put 2 to 3 drops directly in the eyes. This should be done about 2 to 3 times a day for about a week.

Breast Milk: For the mothers that are still nursing or producing milk, your breast milk contains an antibody called immunoglobulin A (IgA), which fights off germs, preventing them to grow, and prevents bacteria from latching onto the surface of the eyes. Put 2 to 3 drops directly in the eyes 3 times a day for about a week.

Triple Antibiotic Ointment: Any antibiotic ointment or bacitracin will kill off bacteria and can be smeared right over the eyelids 2 to 3 times a day for about a week. You can purchase this ointment at any grocery store or pharmacy, and just an FYI, the store brand ointments are just as effective.

Colloidal Silver: This can be very effective for all types of conjunctivitis, but should be used for no more about 5 days for babies and small children. No more than a week for adults. The colloidal silver attracts the infected cells in the eyes electromagnetically, which then sends them directly to the bloodstream where they can then be wiped out.

Just Precaution And Preventive Measures

Though I am no longer nursing or producing milk, I always make sure I have green or black tea bags, triple antibiotic ointment, and a bottle of silver drops around the house. I personally use the silver for my own allergic conjunctivitis, as it can be a torture to me all year long…indoor and outdoor.

For my children, I would put a few drops of the tea in their eyes and then smear the ointment over their eyes. I would do this 3 times a day for a week. You will definitely see improvement in the eyes the following day, and though it may fully clear after only 3 or 4 days, I always treated them for a week just to be sure, because conjunctivitis could last for that amount of time.

Always be sure to treat both eyes, even if only one eye is infected. Because Pink Eye is so contagious, it could only be a matter of a day before it has spread to the other eye.

Always be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after treatments. Never reuse teabags, compresses, or towels, and do not share any towels during this treatment process. If you are treating and infant or toddler, you should be sure to change their shirts and onesies frequently.  They should be washed immediately, because Pink Eye can spread around the home pretty quickly.

This is definitely the time of year when colds, viruses, and bacteria can get the best of us, as well as our little ones. Though sinus infections are a very common thing, it can be heart wrenching to watch our poor children suffer helplessly from such a thing and not knowing what to do to bring them some relief. Fear not, as there are quite a bit of natural ways to get rid of this problem right at home.

Sinusitis And The Sinuses

A sinus infection or sinusitis is when one or more sinuses become irritated and inflamed. Sinuses are little, air filled spaces that produce mucus that drains into the nose. Various things can cause irritation and inflammation of the sinuses, which may include bacteria, viruses, air particles (smoke or dust), allergies, and chemicals. Just to name a few.

  • There are sinuses located in the forehead, known as the frontal sinuses. Children don’t develop these until they are about 6 or 7 years of age.
  • The ethmoid sinuses are located in the bridge of the nose.
  • The maxillary sinuses are located in the cheekbones, and are the most common sinuses to be affected.


Symptoms of a sinus infection may include:

  • fever
  • coughing
  • pain of the face
  • nasal congestion
  • runny nose
  • ear ache
  • headache
  • nausea

When treating a sinus infection for your child at home, symptoms should not last more than a few days. If symptoms do remain after a week, I would consider taking your child to his/her pediatrician to be sure that nothing more serious is the issue, or that nothing is stuck in the child’s nasal passage.

Natural Remedies

There are many ways to naturally rid your child of a sinus infection. Here, I will share a few ways that will effectively get the job done and have your child better in no time!

  1. Keep your child hydrated. This helps to keep the mucus thin and able to drain properly. Be sure to keep them drinking plenty of fluids like tea, water, and/or broth.
  2. Humidifiers help to keep the air moist, which also helps the sinuses from drying out. Since we didn’t have humidifiers growing up, my father always kept a large pot of water boiling to humidify the house. This works just as well.
  3. Steam vapors help to relief pressure and break up mucus as well. Boil a small pot of water and let your child inhale the vapors from the pot. Adding herbs to the water, such as rosemary, ginger, thyme, and sage, can be very therapeutic.
  4. Essential oils, such as eucalyptus oil, rosemary oil, oregano oil, and peppermint oil, are also very therapeutic and helpful to inhale with steam vapors. Also, making it easier for your child to breathe if they are having problems doing so.
  5. Steam showers help with vaporizing and can also promote sweating to help your child sweat out the infection.
  6. Saline rinse will help to break up mucus and eliminate the infection. Boil about a cup of water and add a pinch or two of sea salt. Put the solution into a bulb and flush your child’s sinuses one at a time.
  7. Apple cider vinegar is a great way to give the blood a quick PH balance, allowing the body’s gland to properly and effectively fight off infection. Mix 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and have your child drink it a couple times a day. Feel free to add a little honey to make it a bit easier to drink.
  8. Garlic is an antibiotic naturally and is great for curing a sinus infection. Crush a couple cloves of garlic and steep them in a cup of water. Add in some citrus fruit and honey, and have your child drink this a few times a day.

Making Your Baby Food At Home

A Little Food For Thought

There are so many great ideas for homemade baby food that are nice and simple, as well as so many reasons why this could be the best for your baby.

We can spend so much time dieting, counting calories, reading ingredients in our foods, and trying to be sure that we are only consuming the better foods for ourselves, but hardly give this a second thought when picking up the prepackaged fruits and veggies for our babies. I think our minds are easily settled at the fact that it is just simply fruit or vegetable that we are getting, and the labor of pureeing is already done for us. True, it can take a little of our time out of the day to prepare and puree our own baby food, but this can be done in amounts that can easily be frozen and used when ready.

I think that its very important that we take into consideration the extremely long shelf life that these prepackaged baby foods have. Because of this being the case, this means preservatives, additives, and foods being cooked at very high temperatures to kill bacteria, but also killing all the vitamins and nutrients that are essential for healthy brain function and development in our babies, as well as for their overall health. When making the decision to make their food right at home, there is no worry or concern about whether your baby is getting all of their nutrients, or what’s really hiding in the food. So sad to say, and I have never experienced this myself, but have seen quite a few reports of people finding bees, bugs, and even shards of glass in their prepackaged baby foods. Scary stuff!!


Ready For The Solid Foods

Most babies begin eating solid foods at about 6 months old. Some a little sooner. Mommies can usually pretty much tell when their little one is ready for some solid food, especially when the thickening the milk with baby cereal trick just isn’t quite hitting the spot anymore. It is always best to introduce one ingredient at a time to your baby instead of mixed together, just in case your baby has an allergy or intolerance to something. This would make it easier to find out what exactly may have caused the reaction. Also, it is important to know the difference between an allergy and an intolerance to food. Food allergies cause adverse effects in the immune system, whereas, a food intolerance affects the digestive system, due to the body lacking certain enzymes needed to digest certain foods. Though an intolerance could be less serious, symptoms can be similar and is often mistaken as an allergy.

APPLES – contains antioxidants, great source of fiber, calcium, and potassium

PEARS – contains antioxidants, great source of fiber, aids in digestion

BANANAS – potassium, magnesium, protein, carbohydrate, fiber

PEACHES – rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, great source of fiber, rich in calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc, copper, and iron

STRAWBERRIES – contains antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and manganese

APRICOTS – high in antioxidants, rich in fiber, contains vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium

AVACADO (actually a fruit; a pear known as the alligator pear) – a super food, packed with nutrients, loaded with fiber, high in potassium and oleic acid, contains, vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc, and copper

PEAS – great source of protein, fiber, vitamins B, C, and K, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, potassium, and magnesium

CARROTS – contains antioxidants, great source of fiber, rich in vitamins A, B, C, and K, rich in potassium, copper, manganese, iron, and pantothenic acid

SWEET POTATOES – great source of vitamins A, B, and C, fiber, pantothenic acid, manganese, potassium, and copper

GREEN BEANS – protein, very high in fiber, great source of folic acid, vitamins A, B, C, and K, potassium, copper, manganese, silicon, iron, and calcium

All of these can either be boiled, steamed, or even baked to get some tenderness to be sure to get a nice smooth puree. Of course, things like bananas, peaches, apricots, avocado, and strawberries can be blended to a nice puree as it already is. Put your fruit or veggies in the blender or food processor with enough baby water so that, once well blended, the consistency is like a smooth, loose puree. Baby food mills are great for this as well. Again, its always good to do a nice amount of this at a time so you have some to freeze and can pull it out when you are ready to use it. There are also freezing trays available for this.

Know that the fruit and veggie list does not stop here, as these are just to name a few. Healthy eating habits can start being taught to your baby as soon as you decide to introduce the solid foods. It is never too soon, because our mission is to expose them to as less additives as we possibly can. So go ahead. Save yourself some money and have fun with the whole thing. Remember that a healthy baby is a happy baby!!

Mommies Need Natural Love Too

Mommy duty is never an easy task, as there are still so many other tasks for Mommy to tend to aside from caring for the children. Whether a working Mommy or a stay at home Mommy, it is no lie that a woman’s job is never done! And for those of us that have husbands or significant others, you may as well add them in with the children, because we have to be sure we are taking care of them as well. With this being the case, it is easy to be left feeling a little bit down and out, overwhelmed, or sometimes just plain old under appreciated.

I believe that it is very important that we take time out to show ourselves some personal love and care, at least once a week. I know how hard it can be to even get five minutes to yourself, but it is important that we absolutely make this time, as we have a very important role to play..naturally! So we have to be sure we are properly and positively caring for ourselves, because if we can’t do this for ourselves, then who else can he expect to be able to do this for? Just some simple things to allow yourself to relax, or to still your mind, or to detach yourself from the rest of the world for a little while,or whatever it is that puts you at peace. Try giving yourself about an hour or two once a week. This really should be everyday, but I know that sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. You also want to be able to be free from all distractions or disruptions, as this is your time to only be concerned with self.

  • Try taking a nice hot bath. Sometimes this just what we need to relax our muscles, our minds, and to rejuvenate ourselves, to allow for a fresh start when the next task arises. Put some essential oils in your bath, like lavender oil or eucalyptus oil. The aroma is extremely pleasant and relaxing, and your entire being will feel refreshed after a nice quiet soak with either of these in the water. Herbs are also nice to mix in. Chamomile great for this, and just one of quite a few. Also, why not soak in some raw oats? This does wonderful for the babies, and it would definitely be the same for you. Your beautiful skin will love this. Light some nice aromatic candles around your bath to keep you in a relaxed mood as you enjoy your hot soak, being that you don’t want to be rushed through your bath.
  • Try giving yourself a good hair wash and condition. You’ll also be giving yourself a wonderful scalp massage. Who doesn’t need that when your mind is constantly on the go. Try using shampoos and conditioners that are free of all the harsh, no good chemicals, because the point isn’t to damage your hair, scalp, or skin..we are supposed to be rejuvenating and picking ourselves up. Suave (to my surprise, being they are so cheap) has some really nice options for this. Also, when styling or maintenancing your hair, use as less products in your hair as possible, as well as no harsh or heavy stuff. This would defeat the purpose of washing all the stress out of your hair, because you would only be putting it right back in. It’s kind of hard to be focused and pleasant with your head clogged full of heavy hair products and harsh chemicals seeping into your body through your scalp.
  • Some soothing music and tea time is also a really great way to unwind and relax. Feel free to use the aromatic candles while doing this as well. Whatever aromas put you at ease and allow your mind to rest. Remember that we are attempting to still our minds, free ourselves from stressful thoughts, and uplift ourselves, so be aware of your music of choice at this time. Something soft, slow, and soothing. No harsh lyrics, and if women are being spoke about, something that has uplifting lyrics to a woman..none of the degrading nonsense that is out there now-a-days. You can’t possibly relax and/or love yourself listening to something like that at a time like this. And your relaxation tea probably won’t even take effect. Check out your local grocery stores, in the tea aisle, for lots of choices of teas that are specifically marked as stress relief, tension tamer, or relaxation (Yogi has quite a few). Plain old chamomile or Sleepytime tea (Celestial Seasons) works great for a time like this too.  One thing I do, though, when getting teas in individual bags, is remove the tea from the bag and use cheesecloth or a strainer instead, as there may be some not so pleasant chemicals hiding in those bags. You can always just buy bulk teas to save yourself the trouble.
  • Give yourself a mani/pediI must say..when it comes to this one, I am GUILTY GUILTY of using all the chemical based stuff that the world has to offer. If the color is perfect, then it’s got me! But who doesn’t need or deserve a nice foot soak and scrub after so much footwork all throughout the day, and there is always something that has to be done. And it always makes me feel nice inside when I have gorgeous hands and feet when I’m slaving around all day, because it makes me feel good to remember that I at least took the time out for ME.

The mother is the child’s first teacher, the first one to show them unconditional love and affection, probably the first to have to discipline them, and probably their first everything. They watch us very closely, even when it seems they are paying us no mind at all. They want to mock us (especially little girls), and want to be where we are, all the time. When in the world is it possible to have some “me time?” There is no way in the world. Especially when you are expected to be at five different places at one time, doing five different things at a time.

I know after the day is done and everyone is fast asleep, you probably are ready to crash out as well. I know I sure do, but this is one of the perfect times to pick something to do for yourself, as this is a time when you probably won’t be bothered by anything or disturbed by anyone. Besides, it makes for a better night’s rest. If your littles ones have a nap time, this is another opportunity to take advantage of self time..even if you only want to sleep! Whenever and however you may see fit, take advantage of the time as it presents itself. If we are not caring for ourselves, then the world around us will seem as it doesn’t care either. This is simply just the Law of Reflection, one of the Seven Laws of Mother Nature herself. Once you decide to start having some “me time,” you’ll begin to see that everything and everyone will seem to be a little more considerate to our needs as well. If we do not love ourselves, then no one else will, and we won’t have any to give to our loved ones, as we will only reflect aggressiveness and frustration. We as women and Mommies set the order and the tone of the household. However it is that you are feeling, everyone else in the house with you can begin to feel the same way. So take some time for relax yourself, to love yourself, and uplift yourself. Everyone else at home will begin, if not already, to give you the same love, care, and respect that you are giving to yourself.

Why Using All Natural Baby Products Is Best

Here, I would like to share some personal thoughts and views as to why using all natural baby care products is probably best, as opposed to some of the well known products that are typically being used today. As loving, caring parents, it is our duty to maintain the healthiness and happines of our babies, and understanding why it is best to use products that are all natural, is a great way to make this possible. We must make ourselves aware of what is really going into the bodies of our little ones (as well as our own), and choosing to use the products with all natural, non-toxic ingredients could be the best decision that you’ve made. This may also save your baby from serious ailments and frequent trips to the doctor’s office.

My Experiences With This Matter

When I was a child, my father never bought any of the products that eveyone loves to use and to eat. “That stuff’ll kill you!” or “That’s probably got pork in it!” is what he said about everything.

We didn’t use things like toothpaste, lotions, deodorants, and the average soaps. If he wasn’t making these things himself, then he knew where to get alternative products with a very short list of simple, natural ingredients. As a child, you don’t have a clue about the importance of this kind of thing, but as I grew up and had children of my own, I then completely understood.

When my son was born, he was always sick with something! All his ailments gradually began to clear up, and were eventually gone. They were gone for good and not just suppressed, like the meds were doing, as they really weren’t helping anything. It finally hit me like a ton of bricks That this was why my father felt the way he did. The things I was allowing in my son’s body and on his skin, had obviously caused these reactions. By the time my daughter came along I knew better.

It’s bad enough that all of these dangerous chemicals are in adult products, but why in the world would they be in products for babies?
